I love taking part in these Popcorn Box Blog Parties hosted by Laura Kelly! It’s such fun to take something as simple as a popcorn box and use your creativity to turn it into something fun for Halloween. Last year I made a Haunted House Luminary and this year, I came up with these cute door hanger boxes filled with caramel corn snack mix. And as always, we have a fantastic giveaway so be sure to enter below!
Perhaps you’ve seen the “You’ve Been Booed” idea – you put together a gift for your neighbours and leave it on their front porch. I love the way it can bring neighbours together but it also puts a bit of pressure on because they are supposed to “pass the boo along”.So, I decided to do something more along the lines of May Day baskets: something quick and inexpensive that I could hang on their doorknobs that would give them just a bit of neighbourly cheer.
Now when I saw the colours of Kunin felt in the package of supplies Laura sent us, OF COURSE, my first thought was of candy corn. If you know me at all, you know I’m kind of obsessed with candy corn. I only eat about 10 pieces of it each year before I start finding it way too sweet BUT I love the colours. In fact, when I was a kid, my bedroom was orange, yellow, and white.
So, I cut strips of the felt and then made a bunch of snips along one edge to create fringe. Using simple white glue, glue these onto the popcorn box from World Market. You can cover the box first if you want but I found the felt was thick enough that the colours on the box didn’t show through. For the very top strip, I traced around the scalloped edge of the box but you can also just hide that edge with a straight edge of felt if you prefer.
To make the handle, I cut skinny strips of each colour of felt and braided them together. To secure these inside the box, I glued them in and then covered them with a piece of duct tape to make sure it’s going to hold the weight of the snack mix.
Now it’s time to make the snack mix. I just love the taste of caramel corn mixed with cheese corn so below you’ll see my favourite caramel corn recipe to which I just added my favourite brand of cheese corn. I found some Cheetos that were shaped liked pieces of a skeleton so of course those were going in. I added some mini pretzels as well. Then I threw in candies – candy pumpkins, yellow and orange jellybeans, and candy corn (naturally). You can mix together whatever you want. I made a huge bowl of this mix with one bag of each of the snacks, one batch of caramel corn, and a combo pack of the candy so all in all, it was under $20.for the whole thing. This would fill at least 10 popcorn boxes, making it under $2 each. I put the mixture in plastic bags before putting into the popcorn boxes to keep it all clean.
- 10-12 cups popped popcorn
- 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- Melt butter in pan over medium heat.
- Stir in the brown sugar and blend thoroughly.
- Turn the heat up slightly and bring to a boil.
- Boil about 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat.
- Stir in the vanilla, salt, and baking soda.
- This will cause the mixture to bubble up.
- Stir well until it is thick and smooth and glossy in appearance.
- Pour over popcorn and stir well - either have someone help you so the pouring and stirring can occur at the same time or do this in small batches so you can make sure to coat the popcorn well with the caramel sauce.
- Place coated popcorn on baking sheets and put into a 250 degree F oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
- Cool and serve or package up for use within the next two weeks.
What would you make from an empty popcorn box?
